Leading/Managing During The Economic Crisis

By admin

This is the first in a series of posts about leading/managing during the economic crisis.

The content of these posts will include unedited transcriptions from a recent webinar addressing “How to Optimize Teams’ Effectiveness in Difficult Economic Times”.   The webinar contained questions from the attendees.  The questions are answered by  the following five management and leadership experts:
Jerry Houston, Carol Bergmann, A.J. Hiltenbrand, Ed Oakley and See Luan Foo.

The rest of this first post in the series contains an unedited transcription of the introduction to the webinar:

Ed:  Welcome everyone to “How to Optimize Your Team’s Effectiveness in Difficult Economic Times”.  I’m Ed Oakley founder and CEO of Enlightened Leadership Solutions.  We have had the pleasure and privilege of working with over 50,000 managers from 67 countries over the last 21 years.
Now, if you like the value of what you’re going to experience today, you can thank the members of making managers into leaders institute, our online learning community because it was their idea to open this discussion up to non members.  They realize this is difficult time for a lot of people and so why hold it the value of this conference to our membership so you can thank them. Now, the other people you can thank are our four esteemed guest panelists who are indeed experts in Organizational Effectiveness and Leadership.  They have volunteered to address all the questions we had time for during this 60 to 90-minute webinar and based on the number of questions we already have.  I suspect this is going to be toward the 90 minutes side.Let me start the introductions.  I want to start with the very special woman on our team Carol Bergmann.  Carol has worked in strategic and internal consultative roles in large technology companies for quite a few years before starting her own company and actually 15 years ago she was a client of Enlightened Leadership Solutions and the work made a big difference for the company and to Carol personally.Ever since then she has been doing consulting and coaching with Enlightened Leadership Solutions as well as starting her own company “A Line for Action”.  Carol has also written her first book already and she is the executive coach that I personally turn to when I need help.  Welcome, Carol.

Carol:  Thanks Ed.

Ed:  Alright.  Our next guest panelist is See Luan Foo in Singapore where it is midnight if I’m not mistaken.

See Luan:  Yeah, correct.

Ed:  Alright.  See Luan specializes in coaching global leaders and managers.  He operates from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and has coach managers from over 20 countries.  See Luan has a strong background in a variety of key management and executive roles in global companies like Nestle and Exxon.  Welcome See Luan.

See Luan:  Thank you.

Ed:  Alright.  Jerry Houston is next.  Jerry is founder and CEO of Houston International Partners, a 16-year-old business that is dedicated to the development of human potential and the pursuit of excellence.  Jerry has a list of awards so long I won’t even start to mention them.  I’ve had a great deal of respect and admiration for him for years.  It’s a privilege to welcome you Jerry.

Jerry:  Thanks Ed.

Ed:  Alright.  A. J. Hiltenbrand is our last but certainly not the least panelist.  He is a former client.  Can you believe that A. J. had a nerve to retire on us?  He was director of Executive Development of Alcon Laboratories, a consistently named one of the top 50 companies to work for in the United States, built such a strong leadership development program at Alcon that a dozen Alcon executives who went through a six-week Harvard Executive Program costing $40,000 each consistently said his program was more practical and usable than the work from Harvard.

Now please forgive me for mentioning that Enlightened Leadership Solutions work was the heart of that program.  Welcome A. J.

A. J.:  Yeah, yes it was.  Good morning and good night around the world.

Ed:  Yes, indeed.  Good point.  We do have people from all over the world and so I welcome you whatever time or day it is.  Okay, that’s our line up and we’re going to jump right into the questions, I know that’s what you’re here for, so we’re not going to spend anymore time anywhere else.

That was the end of the introduction to the webinar.  My next post will start with the questions and answers.  I plan to publish this series of post every two days.
